I am often asked why I started my own business and so I thought I would share my ‘why’ with you.
My website design journey began when I tried to find a solution to sharing and managing all of my family photos, easily and interactively. I designed a simple gallery website which I could share with members of the family, enabling them to keep up to date with what we were getting up to and how the children were growing up.
From there, I built my first website for my brother’s crematorium business whilst still working in the commercial world. What a morbid way to start, hey?!
I realised, I wanted to live life on my terms.
I was often being asked to help neighbours, friends and family with technology issues in between my day job.
One day, like many others, I woke up and realised I didn’t want to have to turn up at a set time each day. I wanted to get off the treadmill of life and enjoy it. Being able to work and travel on my terms was suddenly a possibility.
I loved my job, my team and the salary was good but none of this was enough to make me stay. I would wake up in the morning before work thinking, ‘I could really do with popping to Sainsburys, but the constraints of work hours just wouldn’t allow. I knew then, I wanted to be master of my own time.
'Help With This, Help With That'
I fondly remember sitting down in the garden with Phil – my husband, armed with a glass of wine, attempting to come up with a business name. ‘Help With This, Help With That’ was our first suggestion. I knew I wanted it to be generic, so that I could keep up with the fast, changing world of technology without being limited by the name of my business.
ShortTech was a lightbulb moment. We had been thinking, talking and brainstorming name ideas for weeks and I eventually woke up one morning with it on my mind, turned to Phil and he said – ‘Yep, that’s it!’ and so, ShortTech was born.
It is a combination of my endearing (and somewhat amusing!) 4’10” height and the field of technology.
I'm passionate about helping other small business owners.
Website design and tech support was a natural path for me to go down given my previous work experience. I am constantly looking to further my knowledge, taking part in online courses, watching tutorials and keeping up to date with the latest software and tools.
I am passionate about helping other small businesses and sole traders avoid being taken advantage of by larger, more commercial agencies. Through my personal approach and affordable services, I help these businesses get started using WordPress which is a scalable tool that will work with your business as it evolves. My recurring care plans are designed to work with you, keeping me intrinsically connected to your business, on hand as and when you need me.
Here is one of my previous website designs for a local client in Chichester, West Sussex. Whilst I work with sole traders and small businesses across Sussex and Hampshire, the bulk of my business comes from sole traders and small business in Chichester, Bognor Regis, Petersfield, Midhurst, and Portsmouth areas.
